Quality 2013 Cadillac ATS

Cadillac CTS has been sold as a competitor to both compact and midsize cars luxury German and Japanese, because until recently, GM has no choice. CTS is now a half-size larger than smaller cars, slightly smaller than the 5-Series sedan like and E-Class.

And that is why ATS. This is a true compact sedan, measuring directly the Mercedes C Class, Audi A4, Infiniti G37, and only slightly smaller than the brand-new BMW 3-Series. That gives the next CTS - since the 2014 model year - the space to grow into a mid-size class.

With those numbers, ATS measures 182.2 inches in length, and riding on a wheelbase of 109.3 inches. It is 55.9 inches, 71.1 inches. Cadillac proudly weights were low, ranging between 3315 to 3629 pounds, depending on the drivetrain configuration. And in terms of interior space, ATS checks with 42.5 inches of front leg room, 33.5 inches rear leg room and 10.2 cubic feet of trunk space.

Against most of its competitors, the front passenger ATS 'lounge and chairs compares very well. Base front buckets is good enough to compare with schools German firm and smooth, optional performance seats have backrests very supportive, thinner in profile, and has a chest adjustable thigh bolsters and pillows. Depending on the existence of a sunroof, ATS has been worth it for a good headroom for adults six feet, and the leg relative, and as much or more knee room than the competition.

It was in the back seat room and luggage space in which ATS suffer. Class C has about the same back-seat space - tight - while slightly larger A4 and BMW seem bigger and closer to the Infiniti practical for routine use today. ATS can not handle four adults were great as well, unless the front passengers are willing to put their knees close to the dash, and rear doors that do not have a very large opening. Of the same overall length, the BMW seems to have extracted more useful in space, and more trunk space - 17 cubic meters, with a weak ATS '10, 2 cubic feet cargo bin smallest in its class.

ATS made for people with a lot of humiliation in car storage. Behind the CUE infotainment screen is almost 2 liters of safe large, it is accessed by a knock on the metal frame just below the screen CUE. Panel rotates smoothly out of the way, and a soft ambient glow lights up trash. It's big enough to hold cell phones, radar detectors, Rubik Cube or two.

ATS score again in the quality of trim and coherent design. It's on a different vector, but in the same plane, with the latest Audi A4, for attention to detail, while the lagged 3-Series was built for a much lower cost. Magnesium shift paddles real, haptic interaction with CUE, CUE coordinating graphics and icons on both screens, and even high-quality display of basic imitation leather interiors all speak to the level of attention that most escaped CTS today. There is no logical spray of a single function buttons, mismatched gray plastic painted, only a few small pieces of piano black trim that serves as a reminder of the price point where the ATS is built.

On that note the quality is less visible, weight is a hefty problem with ATS. At about 3,400 pounds, Cadillac is proud to say it is lighter than the A4, and right in line with the C-Class and 3-Series. Holes were drilled across the structure of the body to remove mass wherever possible, so it can be re-added where needed - such as cast iron differential in the rear, which engineers say is better for durability, heat dissipation, and distributes the weight of the best, or maintain the thickness of the glass , for better soundproofing. ATS does not have a rock-solid sound of the door of some old school German sedan - but have you heard the clang of banging shut the door 3-Series new lately?
