If the crash-test ratings are what count - and they should - it's hard to do better than the 2013 Kia Optima. Top rated in each test of the federal government and the insurance-funded IIHS, Optima has an excellent record that is hard to beat.

In all fairness, the 2012 results and has not been extended to 2013, but at the time of posting, but the Optima is essentially carryover for 2013 is likely to keep this top-notch ratings will carry over. That includes 'good' ratings in each category of the IIHS tests (except 'acceptable' small overlap frontal score), making it a Top Safety Pick + overall vehicle. It also gets a five-star score in all tests - including tests of the poles - from the federal government. While Optima is structurally similar to the Hyundai Sonata, Kia has a number of different details - which, apparently, makes the difference here, like the Sonata only manage a score of four-star frontal Optima while achieving five stars.

Standard front active headrests on the 2013 Optima, along with front seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain bags. So is the Brake Assist and Hill Assist Control, which helps prevent rolling back when starting uphill, and electronic stability control.
