While the basic Beetle and the sporty Turbo may not get the gas mileage you'd expect, TDI Beetle, both coupe and convertible, scores an impressive EPA figures who have overcome a lot of real-world usage.

Base 2013 Volkswagen Beetle uses the familiar 2.5-liter five-cylinder petrol engine, and a score of 22/31 mpg city / highway with the five-speed manual transmission. The base Beetle convertible is only available with the automatic, and the score mpg 21/27 less than impressive.

Turbos Beetle uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and convertible score mpg 21/30 in the manual and 21/29 mpg in the DSG dual-clutch cover. Turbo coupe level EPA-estimated 21/30 mpg in the manual and 22/30 mpg in the dual-clutch shape.

Best mileage was not with gas, but diesel, in TDI Beetle. Assessment mpg 28/41 at lis manual, or 29/39 mpg with the dual-clutch, for coupe models, and mpg 28/41 identical to TDI Convertible (only available with a manual), estimates put it within reach of several hybrid compact / sport in the market. In real world use, many Volkswagen TDI owners have been able to consistently beat the EPA numbers.
