Jaguar XJ has a lightweight aluminum body structure, but until now had only middling gas mileage.
The addition of the six-cylinder engine, stop / start, and eight-speed automatic brings much better highway gas mileage potential to Jaguar XJ - if you can control your baser urges.
Doing simple math. Last year entry-level XJ V-8 rated by the EPA at 16/23 mpg, this year has been supercharged six is pegged at 18 miles per gallon city, 27 miles per gallon highway, or 23 mpg combined.
Adding all-wheel drive, whether you are in a short-or long-wheelbase car, the numbers drop to 16/24 mpg or 19 mpg combined.
The normally aspirated V-8 is available in the form of 385-horsepower, now working with more efficient eight-speed automatic. Thus paired, 2013 XJ received a score of EPA 16/25 mpg, or 19 mpg combined.
Finally, choose the supercharged V-8 - either 470-hp or 510-hp, short or long-wheelbase versions - and gas mileage 15/23 mpg, or 18 mpg combined, up to a mile per gallon highway from the single-year numbers ago.
XJ's stop / start system is one of the more happy in the automotive universe. In the bitter cold of driving, we were just there a few times, but cycling on and off with a barely perceptible shake.
