Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash-tested yet 2013 Tesla Model S. In fact, the group does not even register as a car manufacturer Tesla existing yet. And given the relatively low car production and sales volume in the first year or two, it may take some time before one or both groups have something official to say about the Model S.
Meanwhile, the S model is equipped with eight airbags, and the usual suite of electronic safety systems are expected, including traction control, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring system and newly mandatory. Visibility out of the driver's seat Model S is good for front and side, but the sharply angled rear window glass offers little more than a slit in the rearview mirror.
2013 Model S does, but offers from a vast array of electronic security monitoring warning and correction system which line its luxury competitors list. They include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning or correction, and crash-avoidance braking system.
There are also concerns that have not been resolved with the optional rear-facing seats the sixth and seventh, holding a small child and only comes with a four-point racing-style safety harness. Their location in the rear cargo bay - close to the rear bumper, tailgate and roof - can make a rear-impact protection a particular challenge, but we have to wait and see.
