2013 Tesla Model S is visually unchanged from the introduction, the sleek five-door fastback body that compete across the board with the top-level luxury sedan style, especially the Jaguar XJ and Maserati Quattroporte.
In this form, the Model S is sometimes mistaken for a Jaguar XF or XJ. The nose has the elegance of Maserati grille. But most importantly, the chief designer Franz von Holzhausen has fulfilled its purpose for a car that not only embodies the "classical modernity" but provides essentially no indication that it is electrically powered.
The black oval "grille" is actually almost entirely in front blanking plates, to increase air flow around a car that does not need to be sized radiator to cool the engine over. (Model S has a few small radiator to cool the battery and other electrical components.) Viewers who know the Model S is a stylish and expensive cars - but had never heard of "Tesla" - was surprised to find out that the Model S is an electric car.
The interior of the Model S is dominated by a 17-inch touchscreen display that sits vertically above the center console, which operates most of the secondary functions: control climate, audio, navigation, and vehicle settings such as suspension tuning and a few charging behavior. There is also a facsimile analog gauges in the cluster behind the wheel, they are crisp and clear, even when the light filters through the glass panel roof.
But once the wow factor has worn off the center of the touchscreen, 2013 Tesla Model S offers interior, relatively simple unadorned. The colors are subdued, almost muted, with available leather seats and enough high-quality soft-touch plastics where occupants come into contact with them.
Tesla offers several choices of colors, including black, white, brown, and our favorite, a striking dark red at only 1,000 cars in the first Signature Series. The roof of the Model S can be ordered as two large sunroofs back, almost entirely made of smoke-colored glass.
