While the 2013 Tesla Model S is often described as a luxury sedan, it is actually luxurious five-door hatchback that sits five adults comfortably reasonable.
It can, at least in theory, carry two passengers more too: small children are willing to be bound to a pair of rear-facing jump seat in the load bay, controlled by a four-point safety harness. It is nowhere near able to hold seven adults, who made seven passengers claim a little sketchy, but no other saloon of this size even try to hold seven occupants. It became a province of a large crossover utility vehicles (Tesla plans to offer one of those, too).
Seat count aside, the trail car and hatchback convenience makes it surprisingly practical as a family car. It offers comfort for five and significant cargo capacity, quiet and comfortable ride, and of course the operational costs one-third to one-fifth the cost per-mile than comparable gasoline cars - depending on the price of gas and what the owners pay their local utility for a kilowatt-hour.
S Model 2013 has a slightly different seating position than any other luxury sedan, because it was the only thing that holds the battery in its floorpan. Front and rear foot wells so shallow than 5 inches in the car without the battery under the passenger foot. Especially the rear passengers sit in a better position knees-up, back-leaning than competitors from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, or Mercedes-Benz.
Inside, the front seats are supportive, the driving position is good, and most of the controls are well-situated. Front passenger seat has the most space to lie down, while rear passengers will notice that the back of the rear seat tilted slightly steeper than customary.
Outboard rear passengers will also find a wider cabin at shoulder height of their head, with a window into the slope as they ascend to the roof rails. If the car has a choice of a panoramic sunroof, a six-foot man in the back seat came within a fraction of an inch from the headliner. Opening the back door where they had to climb smaller than they look, too, making access to the rear seats is more challenging than expected - although motorists will be quite comfortable once inside.
Model S comes into its own on the road, where it's so quiet and calm that there was essentially no mechanical noise on acceleration. A high-pitched whining hum - maybe from the power electronics - occurs only occasionally, at full acceleration. With the stereo off, the tire becomes clear voice, and then kick the wind noise above 40 mph or more.
Sitting behind the wheel, some clear customs. Tesla chose the column shaft from Mercedes-Benz (which has part of the company), with both the cruise control and turn signal is lower, which means that the driver Model S will try to signal cruise lever until they train themselves. Tesla uses automatic electric parking brake, but activate automatically when it senses the car park the driver out. to the right oblique and telescoping steering column, voter drives that offer only D, R, and P.
Total interior volume of the Model S is rated at 95.1 cubic feet. There are a total of 58.1 cubic feet of load space with the seats folded down, or 26.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat load bay above. There is also an additional 5.3 cubic feet in front of a surprisingly large trunk, which Tesla insisted on calling "frunk." Total cargo space compares quite favorably to stem abysmal 6.9 cubic feet smaller than Karma equal-on-the-outside Fisker, which is so small inside that the EPA as a subcompact.
Towards the end of the 2012 model year, Tesla's biggest challenge is to increase the volume of production to 400 cars a week while maintaining the highest standards of quality build. Cars beginning we saw seemed well put-together, showing just stubborn rear seat belt retractors and a Velcro patch on the front parallel-trunk liner - both problems fixed.
Tesla plans to issue regular software updates for the car the previous model S, which allows the company not only fix a potential security problem, but also adds low tide - most likely, we suspect, with the additional cost in some cases.
