2013 Mazda CX-5 is the company's first all-new crossover utility vehicle in a few years. It replaces the discontinued Mazda Tribute and low volume (old-style light modified Ford Escape) and CX-7, which is slightly larger but has more interior space and gas mileage is much worse.
Aimed right at the heart of the compact utility market, the new CX-5 offers an interesting alternative to the perennial best-seller-new 2013 Ford Escape, in 2012 redesigned Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox, which has been with us now for several years .
In support, the CX-5 is stylish, spacious, handles beautifully, and had to return some of the highest gas mileage figures in the category. Important drawback is that the fuel economy comes at the expense of power-in some circumstances, there is just not enough oomph to be competitive there.
Coat the CX-5 is usually Mazda, with expressive design, large wheel arches, and rising window line. In the future, however, Mazda has thankfully rid of "smile" grinned looking handsome form trapezoidal grille. Inside, the look is straightforward, with silver piping trim control and red sporty car seats. The high level sensitive skin color, though, with lighter shades accent the height of the doors and dark tones make it lower and sporty.
2013 Mazda CX-5 comes with only a single engine, the new 155-hp 2.0-liter four-offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox (front-wheel drive only) or six-speed automatic (which can be ordered with all-wheel drive as well ). The entire powertrain is tuned to maximum efficiency, such as the design of vehicles, Mazda's first fully designed under the philosophy of the company's SkyActiv maximum efficiency of each component and feature.
Fuel efficiency is remarkable for a vehicle this size - EPA combined rating is 28 mpg with all-wheel drive, 29 mpg for the front drive - and we saw 27.4 mpg on a 350-mile road test of about two-thirds of the highway mileage . However, transmission is very biased toward low engine speeds, and to get the performance out of it, the driver must accelerate hard and the transmission downshifted usually have not once but twice.
That said, we found the CX-5 to be simply the best handling crossovers we've driven. Mazda shows pride in its grip by inviting journalists to take the CX-5 around the famous racetrack Laguna Seca, where he frees himself admirably. If you have been out of a sport sedan or hot hatch and moving up to a compact crossover, this is the one for you.
Inside, the seats are comfortable and well-supported in the future, and there is plenty of room in the back seat even for a 6-foot adults. Long and flat load floor, with a clever folding seat arrangement rear 40/20/40 split. And the CX-5 in the most quiet - although hard acceleration and engine revving engine noises more than we thought.
CX-5 comes in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The base Sport starts at $ 20,695 (plus $ 795 shipping fee required), and the highest level Grand Touring with navigation and other options running just over $ 30,000 - a good price for some of the other competitors.
