Gas mileage is not always the first reason buyers see a pickup truck. But as the price has risen to $ 4 areas, fuel economy has become essential for towing capacity, especially for contractors and independent contractors, and truck makers have responded with an excellent new drivetrains.
Among full-size pickup, 1500 Ram now best fuel economy values in the version of the base class, and we expect some of the best numbers for the V-8 models as well.
Base Ram 1500 with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and eight-speed automatic (and rear-wheel drive) mpg is now rated at 17/25, which easily trounces the next best truck in this segment, Ford F-150. With a 3.7-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic, the F-150 is rated at 17/23 mpg. In HFE trim, 1500 Ram adds air window active and stop / start technology (which turns the engine off when the full-stop at a red light, for example-then restart the instant you lift off the brake pedal) to improve city gas mileage to 18 mpg. The figures overall far more than anything in the class, even surpassing those of some mid-size crossover, even those GM hybrid pickup.
The Ram mid-line 4.7-liter V-8 is less competitive in its class. It brings more on the lines cut in recent years, with a five-speed automatic. In rear-wheel-drive versions, it is rated at 14/19 mpg in the 2012 model year, the EPA has not released final numbers for 2013 yet, but we did not expect much change. This engine is also flex-fuel-capable, but when running on E85, the economy dropped in the 2012 model for the 9/13 mpg, due to the lower energy content of ethanol relative to gasoline.
Rorty Chrysler, powerful HEMI V-8 is due to some gas mileage improvement as well, although they will not be available until January 2013. 5.7-liter engine achieve mpg EPA rating of 14/20 when equipped with rear-wheel drive and six-speed automatic in 2012 models, the combination of which will be available in the 2013 model year, even after the new eight-speed automatic stop / start technology to replace the some models. Those upgrades will join the standard cylinder deactivation, which cuts fuel delivery to some cylinders when full power is not needed. Opting for the four-wheel drive from knocks 1-2 mpg city and highway ratings in the 2012 model year, to rank 13/18-mpg.
