Unlike other manufacturers who now fit up to 10 airbags, 2013 Mazda CX-5 has six: two for the front passenger, two side pockets, and two window curtains.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the CX-5 highest rating of "Good" for frontal offset and side impact crash tests, for roof strength, and rear crash protection. IIHS also designated CX-5 a "Top Safety Pick." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the results of a test for the CX-5, but Mazda says it hopes to achieve the highest safety ratings from the government agencies as well.
2013 CX-5 has the usual complement of electronic aids, including stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes and other safety systems control. And the handling so predictable that we expect more drivers than usual just to get around or away from potential danger. Mazda is also very proud of the entire body shell rigidity, despite its light weight.
Visibility to the front and side is very good, with an angle that is clearly visible from the driver's seat, a low hoodline reveals many paths in front, a low beltline and large door mirrors mounted low and far enough back that there is a gap between them and the windshield pillar-improve the ability of drivers to see pedestrians and road shoulder to the side.
Rear quarter vision is as bad as a good forward visibility, though. Over their shoulders, the driver will see the blind spots just a giant in the corner, with a small triangular windows that offer a little help. A rearview camera for reversing offered on higher trim levels, but this is a car that we thought it was an absolute necessity.
