While the 42-mpg combined gas mileage rating put on the most fuel efficient car, the 2013 Lexus CT 200h does not have to face new competition when it launched two years ago.
New Ford C-Max Hybrid hatchback, for example, gets a combined EPA rating of 47 mpg. In the highest-end trims, C-Max can be considered as a viable contender for the CT 200h hatchback is less roomy - even if the Lexus brand took a more upscale image of the Ford mass market. And if the gas mileage is your only goal, high-end models of the Toyota Prius liftback still got 50 mpg combined.
Of course, real-world mileage varies (and wildly) based on conditions - like most hybrids, and indeed any car. If you are actually dozens of CT, you may see mileage creep toward the 20s. Most people have to achieve an average of nearly 42 mpg EPA city, 41 mpg highway ratings. For several real-world drive, we have seen the results in the 30's - and, with careful driving, as high as the mid 40's.
Just like the Prius, the CT 200h is equipped with exhaust gas recovery system that helps reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. It also helps in reducing the length of time that gasoline engines run on a short trip use.
