The EPA rates the front-wheel drive version of the 2013 CX-5 at 29 mpg combined, which is excellent for a compact crossover class. If you order a six-speed manual, you will get a bit higher highway rating (35 mpg vs. 32 mpg) than the six-speed automatic, but both versions get 26 mpg rating of the same cities.
Adding all-wheel drive (only available with the automatic) imposes a penalty a little: It is rated at 25 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, for a combined rating of 28 mpg - maybe even better for relatively compact crossover with all-wheel drive.
Test drive we covered 140 miles in total, divided between a freeway and two-lane winding hilly roads. Our automated CX-5 returned 24.6 for the first leg, up into the mountains around Los Angeles, and 30.3 mpg more valuable to fall back to the LA basin.
Mazda also plans to introduce a 2.2-liter diesel engine for 2014, and while the company was coy about which vehicles it will power, most likely it is the CX-5. This will be the first diesel-powered Mazda in three decades (the company sold some diesel pickups in the early Eighties), and should return fuel economy figures are much higher than the petrol model.
