Many have tried, and failed, to steal an enviable spot in the heart of a sports sedan BMW enthusiasts. The 3-Series is not just a perennial leader - it is a totem which all other luxury sedans are judged.
But this is not about the Bimmer. It's about the 2013 Cadillac ATS, a car that comes so close to the high standards of BMW handling and so audible thumps on cabin quality and technology, fog up 3er default status as class leader. Of course, owes much to the ATS, Infiniti G35 which broke the first ground, and with a softened Audi again until Mercedes-Benz even felt comfortable enough to step on holy ground. ATS just doing a job, the most convincing of the most comprehensive yet of heating grid for a few sacred cows.
This is done largely without the impact of Art & Science styling theme that launched the Cadillac brand back in 2003. Whereas the first CTS sliced into memory with a hard-edged style of electric signs, and give something of its own when it is needed. Art & Science of the Cadillac may save the fate of Lincoln, but in 2013 the ATS, has been polished - watered down - to be suitable for people who rent A4S and Class C with a score?. There is a crispness quite profiles and V-shaped in some details to distinguish it as the Cadillac of the set, but the view has relaxed many of the early days of hunger. The cockpit is the most confident: it is dominated by soft blue light CUE, which, transformative iPad-like controller that replaces knobs and buttons with a smooth glass touch screen that responds to friction and taps.
Cadillac is a patient to be taken seriously as BMW, and was willing to go to extreme length to get it engineered. ATS angle wrapped around a lightweight body and a choice of GM four-cylinder, turbo four, or six-cylinder engine, manual or automatic six-speed gearbox, rear or all-wheel drive, and a conventional or a magnetically-controlled suspension. The base four-cylinder does not inspire or change us off, but it is packaged in such a way that it would be a rent-friendly special, at best.
No, meat is a lineup of four turbo, rated at 272 horsepower, paired with the Tremec six-speed manual, with the left and rear-wheel drive performance package set that removes Control, Magnetic Ride expensive either, this ATS is our choice for value The most entertaining in the lineup. High cholesterol crowd had to make do with the 321-hp six in the Premium ATS with all-wheel-drive and a paddle-shifted automatic, good for a 0-60 mph time of about 5.4 seconds, a few ticks less than the turbo four. No V-8 is offered at all - gas mileage, but in a place that characterize American luxury-car, which replaced regular Cadillac BMW-like handling, with little body roll and with a great straight ahead tracking of electric power steering, and very better.
Interior ATS 'is awash completed well and on most versions, leather trim accents and a choice of wood, metal or carbon fiber. The front seats in accordance with the company's sport sedan mold - even more so when they upgrade to a chair performance, with a slimmer profile and strengthening power. In front, the interior space is fine - but in hindsight, ATS allows the smaller dimensions, with the rear seat leg room of the most generous in the competitive set, and the rod is a sports bag or two smaller than anything that shopping against. It does have a fairly small-item storage, the most cleverly hidden behind the screen CUE, accessible at the tap of metal on the dash arrows.
For security, ATS sport eight standard airbags, including front knee airbags, with an option for the rear side of the bag - and it received a five-star NHTSA rating overall. It can also be equipped with a lane departure warning system that crowded the driver's seat with a haptic warning with adaptive cruise control can slow the car to reduce accidents in the future, and the rearview camera. Other features include standard Bluetooth, Bose audio, power features and climate control. Options range from the navigation system, for the sunroof, full leather for the interior, carbon fiber trim, for a package that bundles a USB port, SD card reader, Bluetooth audio streaming and HD radio with CUE. CUE is worth diving away all on its own, we thought it was the controller of mass-market the most advanced of all infotainment, and although we have had to use it on a snag or two-car production ready, we'll add it to our enthusiastic ATS, while we have mixed feelings stir on other systems such as MyLincoln Touch, Remote Touch, MMI, iDrive and COMAND.
Prices start at $ 33,990, including destination, for the base four-cylinder ATS. Four turbo brings the basic stickers $ 35,795, while the V-6 versions start at $ 42,090. After our day of driving on the road and on the track, and a few weeks of the judgment seat, we think BMW Cadillac has pierced the veil of invincibility. 2013 ATS strikes right at the 3-Series when it is susceptible to some front, styling and interior fit and finish between them. Students who become a teacher - and there are more in the lesson plan, the ATS coupe and V-Series cars yet to come.
