The Chevy Camaro is a performance story in three parts: the six-cylinder car of surprising power and good fuel economy are opening, while the heart and 1LE SS V-8s encouraging story with dazzling speed. Then, just when you think you've figured it all out, send it all to the ZL1 a new, expensive, somewhat exotic that might make you wonder, what just happened?
LS and LT standard coupe and convertible kicking things off with the horsepower from 323 to 3.6-liter V-6. If you've eliminated the six-cylinder Camaro from your memory because the Berlinettas, it's time to reconsider. This Camaro can rip 0-60 mph time of about six seconds, whether you choose the six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed fat automatically. It's not the most melodious voice in the world - do not listen to the V-8 if you have any hope of escaping showroom for under $ 30,000 - but the acceleration of the V-6 is no longer a penalty.
Handling is not good. Six-cylinder cars have electric power steering is not too artificial in feel, and with 18-inch wheels standard on the control-and coil-over-shock independent rear suspension, the base Camaro with sport suspension package available can feel almost agile - agile as as something that weighs about 3,800 pounds can feel. Convertible are some who feel that have contacted the proper, functioning body structure. However, this is light years ahead of the base Camaro's highest performance Camaro just the last generation, so make sure the expectations have been reset.
There psychographic gap between the car and the V-8 Camaro, Camaro SS and provides all the rumbling every muscle-car drivers want - with a significant handling differences, depending on the steering, suspension, and wheel-and-tire package. Powertrain is a V-8 and six-speed - 426-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 in the manual transmission cars, and the 400-hp version of the same engine with six-speed automatic equipped cars, the power losses associated with material delivery system fuels. With the combination of the two, 0-60 mph in just about 5.0 seconds, accompanied by one of those roaring musclecar irreplaceable held at the Smithsonian audio library. While the six-cylinder cars can get away with an automatic transmission, manual shifter SS 'is not only a prerequisite for collectors - it was a good piece ironed out quickly and shift short movements. Plus, there is a dual-mode exhaust system that mutes the V-8 at low speeds and amps it at full prod - and it's only available with a manual gearbox.
From there, V-8 Camaro family spun off into several branches. All versions have the same suspension design, 20-inch wheels, and now, electric power steering, but the difference in tuning give the edge to the handling of this year's new edition 1LE. Wide and short wheelbase attitude is not helped by the basic SS coupe staggered 245/275 tires and a 52:48 weight distribution, making them feel less tossable Camaro and induce understeer more than can be possible in a car with that much power is available to the rear wheels, though SS and version with sports suspension setup has climbed more than expected control, too.
For more track-ready handling, more neutral, Camaro SS 1LE cure almost all. This twist of life may also be stock SS suspension, from our experience Gingerman Raceway in Michigan. 1LE get its own specifications, with a manual transmission-ratio closer - no automatic available - and 35-series of identically sized front and rear tires, along with monotube rear shocks, the front anti-roll bar, front strut brace, and some suspension mount of the ZL1 for better stability. This package comes with SS less plushly trimmed for some weight reduction, and also got blacked-out hood and spoiler, along with the transmission cooling. It was a revelation to encourage 1LE and expect tons of push: no. With the stability control set to sport mode that allows multiple yaw, 1LE gently step out into oversteer, corrected easily remapped variable-ratio electric power steering that one well-tuned GM efforts. It's possible for an option 1LE SS-spec approach - but the steering is one part that is not available. We have not driven one on a public street, but in the right context 1LE - on road courses - free himself with disinctly un-muscle-car moved.
On top of all the other newcomers, the final act of the Camaro is one of the most difficult to reconcile. This is because more than a supercar from the Camaro, with a pricetag in the range of $ 60,000 to match. The ZL1 SS supercharges the 6.2-liter V-8 with a grand total of 580 horsepower, and adopt magnetic dampers and a number of aero body pieces (hood has a carbon fiber insert) to address excessive upgrades in power. 0-60 mph time is pegged at 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 184 mph - and arranged Chevy Nurburgring in less than eight minutes in the coupe, all figures showing Corvette to cover the highlights of the body.
It's part of the mind-twist ZL1 represent. Is it still the Camaro if it just looks like one? With real performance comes some expensive and disposable add-ons - the launch-control mode, differential cooler, different links for the rear anti-roll bar, dual-mode adjustable suspension - ZL1's more rolling laboratory experiments to what could Camaro when cribs Corvette parts. It is also an instant collection, whether coupe or convertible. And that is consumers are rubber is all electronic aids traction on or off - you will simply measure the loss of tread visible to everyone maid closed, because you also watch the effect of an electric supercar losing battles with the physics, time and time again.
