Stylish, sporty at the time, and on the other efficiently, 2013 Fiat 500 brings a lot to the table considering its small size. But can tackle it before Fiat's reputation for poor reliability, particularly in a market that is full of alternatives from America, Asia, and Europe?
With mischievous, upright styling that wraps a compact passenger compartment in a simple, yet somehow characterful lines, Fiat 500 manages to look upscale segment of the budget. Inside, it's more of the same, with a high style implemented in a cost-cutting materials - without seeing it.
New for 2013 is the Fiat 500 Turbo, which increases output of 135 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque from the 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder. A higher ratio final drive gear on mileage standards 500 and 500 Cabrio improve gas for 31 mpg city and 40 mpg highway also. A new Beats by Dr. Dre provide a better audio system 500 and 500c in-cabin noise, and new colors and premium leather seats enhance personalization. A five-speed manual transmission is also now standard on the model 500 and 500c Lounge.
Despite the improvement, and has been able to make the 500 Abarth performance version of progress, Fiat still has a high hurdle to clear his reputation associated with a rather gruesome than 20 years ago. When the last brand in the American market, build quality and reliability are known poor. Fortunately, that seems to have been fixed to 500 in all different guises.
Better yet, 500 is exciting to drive, especially if you are familiar with the experience of driving a toaster as a tool. Combined with features usually reserved for the next segment, including Bluetooth and auxiliary input jack, Fiat 500 makes a strong case for the value of the purchase, especially for urban dwellers.
Even with a full year under his belt sales in the U.S. - a year that fell far short of the goal Fiat optimistic - it is not clear whether the 500 would manage to swim upstream against the past. Given the strength of the car, especially the competitive set, however, we think it has a good chance.
That chance is greater if the buyers in the subcompact segment has great taste, because there is no question that the 500 stands out from the crowd that included Rio, Yaris, and even the Fiesta. Although the price is a small one, it is art as much as it is a tool, and it's a refreshing change in the world of small cars.
