Since its inception, the Scion FR-S was not meant to be super-fast, super-powerful car. In that case, no one is surprised by the output 200-horsepower 2.0-liter boxer engine. In testing our editors of the car, however, the FR-S often feels like it falls short of the mark claimed.
That's not to say the FR-S is not very fun to drive, however, it was light, tossable, balanced sports car that rewards the driver with the correct setup for the line, and refused to punish for going a little over the limit. Chassis whole talking to the driver, and while the electric power steering has some feel, is easily one of the best we've tested, especially at the price point of $ 25,000 FR-S.
A six-speed manual gearbox standard gear, and throws a very short, precise, and positive. Upshifts and downshifts easily, with little or vagueness play at any point. This is one of the best mass-market stick shift around. Automatic transmission even easier to use, with the option to switch manually via steering wheel-mounted paddles, and while it rev-match downshifts smoothly, sometimes showing some hesitation in selecting a lower gear, especially when the computer was the machine speed is too high - beep and delay past the proper downshift point. However, it was surprisingly competent in the windy canyon roads or race tracks when left alone in the sport mode.
No real performance options or upgrades for 2013 FR-S at this time, but Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is expected to offer some upgrade shortly after the car from June 1 on sale date, with other accessories arrive over the next year.
