Buick Enclave crossover quite ushered in a new era of design in GM's entry-luxury brand, and that may be the biggest reason why - after five years on the market - it is still selling strong.
But the Enclave crossover credentials makes players too. It seats up to eight passengers, many of the standard features, and has an acceptable mileage and predictable handling.
Now, halfway through its life cycle, GM put some fresh touches on the Enclave, including interior upgrades, some minor drivetrain and suspension repair, and hardware new infotainment and connectivity, all in an effort to maintain sales growth.
We will assess the change a success, mainly because they do not tamper with it Enclave goodness. That starts with the exterior, clean stylish curved Coke bottle, which still looks contemporary, and now wears a new grille and LED lights. The cabin in which the changes are more obvious: it is a full-on facelift, with new trim and materials that remove most of the hard plastic we've griped about, and replace it with a soft-touch pieces of the pricetag Enclave was finally content.
Specs remain the same for the Enclave's powertrain. All models have a 3.6-liter V-6, making 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a choice of both front wheel or all-wheel. A six-speed automatic transmission is updated less cunning than ever before - that's good news, as GM and his companions Enclave crossover often hunted through the upper gears. Fuel economy remains the same, at around 24-mpg highway acceptable to a large crossover.
Ride and handling are less clear a massage, but the new shock absorbers in front and behind retuned unobtrusive smooth Enclave or feel quite responsive. It is a vehicle that "big push," but never be one who feels anything but predictable.
Seating configuration, and flexibility in the 2013 Buick Enclave remains the same, and that's fine. It is a great minivan replacement forces. Adds front ventilated seats as an option, and with seating for up to eight, Enclave is an excellent family wagon, although the third row seat is not a place we would choose to sit for hours. There are more than 23 cubic feet of space behind the third row, and if you fold the second and third row there are more than 115 cubic feet of cargo space. It all folds down neatly and flat and just begging for an excursion to the big-box stores.
There are also industry-first safety Enclave 2013: a new front center airbag, which helps protect front passengers in side impacts. Also, for the first time, blind zone alert system side and cross-traffic warning system in the Enclave at the back, which in the 2012 edition that has been getting a top score of 10 in safety here because of the excellent overall five-star NHTSA rating plus the IIHS Top Safety Pick status . Both agencies have issued 2013, ranking as of yet, though.
IntelliLink is great news for some buyers, because it brings the Enclave's interior up to the leading edge connectivity, the interface is relatively simple, well integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming functions, and audio applications for Pandora and Stitcher. A rearview camera system, USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio and voice recognition is also part of the standard equipment this year, while navigation is optional, as a ten-speaker Bose sound upgrade.
